Fresh Off The Hook: Dobby

It's Dobby!!

I absolutely love how this little house elf turned out.
The amazing pattern is from Lucyravenscar.

As you can see, I modified the pattern.  I made my own eyes and modified the outfit greatly.
All in all, it is a very easy pattern and works up relatively quickly.

Throwback Thursday: Bibs

Today we are looking back to 2011!  A year after I taught myself to crochet.

These adorable bibs were made for a local store where I sell my items.  I love the fishy one, it reminds me of Goldfish Crackers!

Although the styles are my own, the general bib pattern can be found HERE for FREE.

Off the Hook: Fabulous Friends

When my children were younger, they loved the French-Canadian show, Toopy & Binoo.  I was thrilled when I found this pattern!  And even though my children are not pre-school aged anymore, they loved these crocheted critters as soon as they saw them!

The pattern for these fabulous characters can be found at The Whole Knit and Caboodle.
The pattern is quite detailed and has several images to assist in the making and assembly.  Although time consuming, it is easy to follow.

If you are interested, the pattern can be purchased from The Whole Knit and Caboodle Ravelry shoppe.

Tuesday Tips: Double Crochet Foundation Chain

The Double Crochet Foundation Chain is and excellent technique to learn.  It eliminates the look of the base chain on items and if used for the base of a band for a hat, gives it more stretch.

Simple Crochet has a great video HERE.

Do you use this technique often?

Yarn Haul!

I have a couple big orders coming up, so I made a trip to my local Michaels.
I am a little upset that I missed the mega 50% yarn sale by one day though.

Last year I had several orders for these super cute bubble slouch slippers.

I was very impressed with how these turned out, and the sole of the slipper is insanely thick, so it was perfect for my cousin's dance team to keep their toes warm in-between sets.  This year matching slouch hats are in demand for the team so I ran out and grabbed a few balls for these.

Of course, I could not find the hot pink anywhere, so that means another shopping trip will be scheduled for the near future.

I also have a couple orders for mermaid tail blankets.
I cleaned the store out of every single ball they had of this shade.

Off the hook - Owl

Similar to the Minion, the owl is a timeless classic style; and is almost as popular!
The colour combinations with this style are endless and although I use my own basic pattern for this design there are several paid and free designs available online.

Do you create owl style hats often?  What is your most popular colour combo?

Tuesday Tips: Jogless Stripes

I have been doing alot of Amigurumi lately.  I love these cute little characters!  However one of the most frustrating things would be making stripes that join uniformly.

Crochet Ever After has an excellent instructional video on creating jogless stripes in single crochet.  It is definately one of the best videos I have seen on the subject: easy to follow and an easy technique to master.

Good luck fellow hookers!!

Off the Hook -- Minion

Although this little fella is fresh off my hook, a minion was one of the first styles I made without a pattern.  Still ever popular, I receive several requests for minions each season.

Which do you prefer, one eyed minion or two eyed?

Off the Hook - May the Force Be With You

I am a huge Star Wars fan and last week I received a rush order for a 5piece Yoda costume for a newborn for Halloween.  I won't lie, when I got the request I was slightly daunted by the task at hand.

It was Thanksgiving weekend here in Canada and I was able to spend alot of time crocheting!  Within two days I was able to whip up this completed look.  I am so very happy with how it turned out.
In a few days time, it will be on its way to it's new owner in Florida USA.  I hope they love it as much as I do!!

Although I modified almost all of the patterns I used, here is a quick run-down for anyone who is interested.

Yoda Shorts (modified) - Calleigh's Clips
Yoda Cape (modified) - Posh Patterns
Yoda Strider Shoes - Beezy Moms Creations
Lightsaber - A Crafty Cupcake (pattern coming winter of 2015)

May the force be with you...

Tuesday Tips: Blanket Edging

My local Dollar Store always has an abundance of cute fleece baby blankets.  However, as cute as they are, I just feel a little "cheap" giving them away as gifts.

Little Yellow House has an adorable solution for that: Crochet Blanket Edging!!!  Imagine all the beautiful "crochet" baby blankets your could whip up, in a fraction of the time!!

Good luck! And have fun!

Something for Saturday: Pattern Round-up

In a effort to blog on a more regular basis I will be adding a new feature to this blog: Saturday Somethings.  This will generally be a write-up of any patterns I have bought, shared on Facebook, or items or patterns I found note-worthy during the past week.

This is the Madly In Love Hat by Moogly.
I adore the texture and braided ribbing in this pattern.  It is offered for FREE on the Moogly blog, or add it to your Ravelry que.

How cute is this Hooded Witch Scarf by Snappy Tots?!
I have several of Heidi's patterns... her creativity never disappoints!
As soon as I saw this pattern come through on my Facebook newsfeed I surfered over right away to purcahse it.  Right now, it is on sale for $1.99USD!  A great deal!  There is still lots of time to get this whipped up before Halloween.

I have had my eye on this pattern for a couple weeks now and decided to purchase it this morning.
I love the fact that this hooded cowl has the mouth piece attached for added warmth.
I will definately be making my children versions of this in the upcoming months!

I also wanted to draw attention to the Stitchers Club: Purple Cap for Babies Campaign.  It is wrapping up for the year, as they only accept donations from April-October.  There is still a few weeks left to donate to this great cause... Find out what it is all about here.

Please note, all images pertaining to patterns, belong to their creator unless otherwise stated.

Throwback Thursday: Cohen Newsboy

When a friend of my became pregnant in 2011, this was one of the first styles I created as a gift.  She picked out the yarn: Bernat Hanicrafter Cotton: Earth Ombre (shown above).  To this day, this basic newsboy is still very popular in my shoppe.

This is a very simple hat - using basic stitches: Double Crochet (dc), half-couble crochet (hdc) and single crochet (sc).  It works up quickly and makes a great gift!

Off the Hook - Little Blue Bear

Last week, I saw the pattern for this adorable newborn bear set come across my newsfeed on Facebook.  I fell in love with the style immediately and knew I would have to make it.  To my surprize, this was a FREE pattern from Knot Your Nana's Crochet

The hat worked up very quickly and the pattern was very easy to follow as it uses basic stitches - single crochet (sc), front-post half-double crochet (fphdc) and back-post half-double crochet (bphdc).  The band uses a technique (that was new to me) called camel stitch single crochet.  You will notice, I modified my band slightly from the original pattern, by adding a row of half-double crochet.

The booties were easy to follow as well using the same basic stitches as mentioned above.

In all, this set took me less than two hours to complete and would make a great gift for any newborn... now I just need to find someone who had a baby boy to gift this to!!

Tuesday Tips: WSC

I stumbled across a new stitch today while looking for a slouch pattern on Revelry.   The wrapped single crochet  (also referred to as the purl single crochet) is a unique stitch that creates a horizontal bar infront of your single crochet and slightly resembles a purl stitch in knitting.  This stitch becomes raised and allows for great texture in your work.

Check it out... the WRAPPED SINGLE CROCHET:

If you are interested in a FREE pattern using this new stitch, please check out the Hadley Slouch.

It All Started With a Cupcake...

I am often asked about my crochet history and since it is Throw Back Thursday, let's take a look back
.
Although my grandmother had wanted to teach me this art in my youth, I never did learn from her.
In 2010, I stumbled across an amazing hat made by April Draven that caught my interest immediately.  I knew I had to learn to make it. Although this was the first pattern I purchased, it was almost a year later before I actually made it.

I sat at the computer for one weekend, glued to YouTube, learning various stitches and crochet techniques.  By Sunday evening, my first item was complete... a purple amugurumi cupcake with pink sprinkles (I would love to link to the pattern I used, but in all honesty, I can't remember where it was from.  There is a multitude of free cupcake patterns online that all look similar... just google it).

So there you have it... it all started with a cupcake... and the rest, is as they say, history.
